Shima Ceramics is the brainchild of artist Chris Shima, based in Port Costa, California. Since 2015, Shima has been crafting distinctive ceramic pieces that defy conventional categories. His work spans a range of themes, from tropical and nautical to horror and the macabre, reflecting his penchant for exploring the darker facets of art.
Each creation is meticulously handmade by Shima and his assistant, Jerridan, employing traditional sculpting techniques with modeling clay and hand tools. They design, sculpt, and mold every piece themselves, ensuring that each item is unique. The process involves slip-casting, trimming, glazing, and signing by hand, underscoring their commitment to craftsmanship.
Shima’s portfolio includes an array of “deviant ceramic oddities,” such as the Shrunken Skull Mugs, Cthulhu Idol Mugs, and the Shub-Niggurath Chalice. These pieces often feature complex designs that challenge the limits of ceramic artistry, sometimes requiring intricate multi-piece molds.
Operating from his home studio, Shima balances his artistic endeavors with family life, sharing his space with his partner Ashleigh, their three children, and two dogs. His dedication to the craft and his unique artistic vision have garnered a following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the fusion of fine art and functional ceramics.
